The game is set at a court similar to that of Louis XIV at Versailles, circa 1675. The world is basically Europe of that period, encompassing the countries of Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Spain--though the counterpart for Russia is considered very remote and doesn't figure much in the game, at all. I don't know why they have bothered with it.
They even recreate the conflicts between Catholicism and Protestantism, and the counterpart for Germany is a lot of little island principalities, some of which are 'Catholic' and some 'Protestant.'
There was a plague last year, since which the King (of 'France') has not been seen and is said to be ill. Meanwhile, the Queen of 'France,' who was originally from 'Spain' has taken over rulership in the King's absence.
This looks really, really interesting. Don't know if I would be able to handle all the court intrigue, though.
Fun point about the game: The Captain of the Queen's Guard is a direct steal from Ladyhawke. (g) You've gotta love people who like a good in-joke.
