Aerden [userpic]
Second Life Preparations

I downloaded the Second Life program today. Looks like everything is good, except I need to download updated video drivers. I'm looking into that now.

Viv and Crys--Do you two still use Second Life?

I do. I'm Saffia Widdershins (but you know that from my entries here, probably).

Mel--My SL name is Aryl Graves. I look forward to seeing you!

I was too scared by it the first time I logged in!

Yeah. I've seen some of the outfits people have their avatars wear. An awful lot of skin showing, if you ask me. I plan to be careful--IF I can get the thing up and running.

I am not into the adult flirtation stuff. I want to make things--like dresses. Lots and lots of period-style dresses. (g) There are these places called sandboxes, where you can learn to create things, and that's primarily where I want to go.

I use Second Life. Look for Sidhana Beaumont in world.

Liz--Cool! I'm Aryl Graves in-world--if I can ever get in. *kicks SL client program*

I haven't had any problems connecting, myself. Which is interesting since they don't even support Vista, and that's my current operating system.

If you can get it to work, the new Windlight viewer is worth using. It rezzes slower, but the detail is fabulous!

There's also a Second Lifers community here on LJ if you're interested in meeting and talking to other SL folks.

Oh, and I've got a couple of landmarks for some really good public sandboxes if you're interested. Not to mention some other really good landmarks. Try and catch me in world and I'll pass some stuff on to you.

I've been on a few times.

But I keep getting lost!

Mainly time is keeping me away.

Did you know they use Second Life as a training ground for some AI systems :)

Crys--I didn't know they use it for AI training. Neat!

I've been sent a complicated list of Things to do by their Help Desk, to see if they can resolve my supposed video driver problem. *sigh*

It looks like you're supposed to be able to 'teleport' your avatar from one place to another, but you have to give yourself landmarks. I have no idea at all how that works.

Teleporting is easy, as is finding landmarks.

To find anything you want or need in SL, just pull up the search box. There are tabs along the top with labels like People, Places, Events, Groups, etc. Pick the tab you're interested in, like places to find things. Type a keyword into the search box (say, dragons, for example) and click on the search button. It'll give you back a list of places that have the keyword you chose in their description. They're ranked by poplularity, with the most popular (and therefore the most crowded) places first.

Simply pick the one you want and then click on the Teleport button on the right side of the search box. Voila, you're there!

If you get completely lost, you can always "teleport home." Your home space is randomly assigned when you go to the mainland the first time. After that, you can join some groups that will let you move your home to their land. Or if you ever decide to buy land, then you can set your home there. I tend to teleport back home every so often just because there's a neat pavilion there that I like to sit in.

Once you get your client issues solved, give me a holler, I'm pretty good at SL, having spent WAY too much time in world! :) Right now, I'm going through my HUGE clothes inventory trying to sort stuff out and get rid of what I don't need!

See you in SL! Oh, yeah, I friended you in SL and left you an IM which you'll get when you finally get online.
