A Freedom of Speech Quandary

There is this theatre house in Germany where they were planning to do a play. This play featured the severed heads of various prominent religious leaders from history, including the Buddha, Christ, and the prophet Mohammed. The theatre, which produced this play two years ago without incident, is now receiving death threats and has decided to not do the play.

I'm conflicted about this. On one hand, I think it's bad to allow oneself to be cowed by people who think they can bully you into silence. On the other hand, it might well be that running this play at this time would be about as stupid as a Ku Klux Klan member strolling into a Black Pride rally. IOW, if you do something you know is going to be deliberately provocative, you should be willing to accept the consequences of your deliberate provokation.

I wish I knew what was the right course of action to take. My instinct says to not bow down to the likes of criminals, but the 'Don't take stupid chances' warning also kicks in.
