Aerden [userpic]
Clostridium Difficile, Being Difficult

Medicine: I read a news article today that indicates the bacterium Clostridium difficile has developed a new strain that is resistant to antibiotics and which is appearing in patients who have not recently been in the hospital or treated with antibiotics. It can cause diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, and can lead to death. Not fun.

Rome: SPQR Blues by meritahut continues to be extremely enjoyable.

Not sure what I think of this; I'm pretty much indifferent to the crew from The Matrix. I'd rather have had the DS9 crew as my result.

Hatching! (Snagged from fireflowerlass.) Okay, so I miss Pern because I've been working on Avriet and haven't taken time to write anything for StarRise Weyr lately. :(

But I can still have a Hatching!

Yes, the Pern fan in me is hoping for a dragon. (g)

Edit: Oh well, no dragon. :)

Current Mood: geekygeeky

Yeah, the C. dif strain started making news when I was at the NIH doing infectious disease in July. Usually it's treated with flagyl or oral vancomycin. I don't remember how they were tackling this new strain. But yeah. We had an HIV patient almost die of C. dif. Crazy stuff.

The article I read said that gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin were apparently prominent in causing the C.dif to mutate. I'll bet this is right up your alley. You're very interested in microbiology, aren't you?

Yep :) I got my BS in micro as a matter of fact and I never stopped liking it... I think that after I finish my residency, I may do the one year fellowship in STD's. Go figure ;)

I think you'd be great at it! It still baffles me how that one place could reject you. You've always seemed very knowledgeable, to me. I'm glad you were able to find places whose residency big-wigs value you. Good luck with those interviews!
