Today, Barak Obama is scheduled to appear in Iowa with Oprah Winfrey for a large fundraising event to support his campaign. This would be all well and good, except for one thing--the Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reed, has ordered Obama to be present for a vote concerning (I think) ethanol subsidies for Iowans.

If Obama stays in Iowa for this scheduled event, he will look like he is more interested in campaigning than in seeing to the needs of Iowans.

If he remains in Washington D. C. for the vote, he will be seen as dutifully attending to the affairs of Iowans and doing his job as a Senator--but he will also probably be perceived as being a weak man whose chain Reed can pull at any time he chooses to. If you think this ethanol vote will happen any time before noon, if Obama stays in Washington for it, you are dreaming. I in fact wouldn't be surprised if Reed delayed it until very late and then postponed it until tomorrow. If Obama goes to Iowa, the vote will of course be held early, so it can later be argued that Obama could have done both, if he'd only been willing to.

Yes, Mr. Reed; we know how the game is played; we're not as stupid as you seem to think we are. We can see what you're trying to do.

I think Obama is going to have to be in Iowa today and miss the vote. To be President, it is better to be perceived as being strong than as being obedient. We want someone who will stand up to injustice, even if this is a very petty form of it. I am looking to see if he will stand up for himself--because, if he won't stand up to someone who is doing him wrong, how can I expect him to stand up to our country's enemies?

You clearly have political enemies, Mr. Obama--rather lowdown, sleazy ones. I will be interested to see how you handle them. I hope you're able to do it with cunning and guile. I'm not a Democrat, but I don't support backstabbing from one's own party on any occasion. Good luck, sir.
