The Weather Overhead: I went to bed last night knowing that Tropical Storm Humberto was headed straight for Galveston and that my office was closed until noon, even though we still hadn't had eveny rain, though the sky was dark with clouds.

This morning, my alarm clock went off at 5:30 as usual, and I listened with astonishment to the weather report. Humberto had become a hurricane overnight and then had turned east and hit Beaumont, instead.

I learned that all watches and warnings had been cancelled for Harris County, so I've come on in to work. The office is still closed, oddly enough.

I feel very sorry for all those folks in Beaumont who went to bed, secure in the knowledge that Humberto was going to hit Houston, and woke up to a hurricane blowing around them. Geeze!
