I posted this in write_away and thought I'd share it here:

I had a thought about combatting writer's block the other day. It sort of dovetailed with my thoughts regarding the story I'm writing.

The thought was, Make your hero's mission your mission.

If your hero has to save at all costs a princess who is locked up in a tower, you the writer must also burn with the need to save that princess. Not with the desire to, but with the need to.

If you understand why you have to do it, chances are, you'll understand why your hero has to do it, and you'll find ways to make the plot work.

It's a reasonable theory, anyway. Anyone else have ideas about this?
