Celebrity Voices Meme

Name 10 celebrities that you would happily listen to for hours as they read the phonebook. My most favorite is #1:

  1. John Billingsley - as Dr. Phlox on Enterprise. I adore his voice!
  2. Antonio Banderas - *swoon*
  3. Rona Downey as Monica, from Touched by an Angel.
  4. Sean Connery - I begin to see a pattern of Celtic voice-love here.
  5. Lucy Lawless in her Xena stage voice.
  6. Peter Graves - He sounds so understatedly Texan!
  7. Madge Sinclair - Jamaican!
  8. Jeremy Irons - So many roles!
  9. The actor who plays T'lk on Stargate SG-1
  10. Leonard Nimoy - Very resonant voice.

I'll pass this on to leianora, shusu, and nixnivis.

Kris Senior thekristeen tagged me with this, too, and reading everyone else's lists is making it harder to do mine. I keep going "OOOoo! Yeah, I gotta include him (or her). And Oh, that voice is just maaaahvelous.

Rosemary--I was going to include Edward Norton, who played King Baldwin IV in Kingdom of Heaven. But then I remembered Antonio Banderas from The Thirteenth Warrior, and I had to switch names. So there are tones of wonderful-sounding actors around.

leianora was remarking that she came up with far more men than women. So did I. Are you finding the same true for you?

I didn't know that was Ed Norton in Kingdom of Heaven.

My list (which is still mental so far) is almost all male. Not purposefully, but I can think of ten male voices offhand, whereas I really have to THINK of some sexy female voices. I think there's a few reasons for this: (1) As a heterosexual female, that's what pushes my buttons. (2) Leaving sex appeal out of it, the male voice is deeper and more resonant, and these are things that are just generally more appealing to listen to. The women's voices I think of as appealing (Catherine Zeta Jones for example) has a mellow register. It's pleasant on the ear. Some are appealing for quirk value-- Holly Hunter's accent makes me smile. Lori Petty's rasp is very distinctive. But I'm not sure I'd want to listen to either of them for hours on end.

Now, Marilyn Monroe's voice was considered sexy, but to me it's like nails on a chalkboard. Same with the little girl squeaks of the Hiltons and their ilk. It must be sexy to someone, but certainly not to me.

Interesting question.

Rosemary--I can't stand Marilyn Monroe's voice or her imitators. Those high-pitched, breathy baby-doll voices don't appeal to me at all. I don't understand why anyone would want to speak that way. My own voice sounds to me as if I'm 12 years old, and I don't like it.

My favorite sexy female voice is Peggy Lee singing "Fever." It doesn't get any more sultry than that, for me. :)

And I keep thinking of people I forgot to list. I hate being limited to 10. But I stand by my list anyway. These things are kind like a snapshot, really. They show what you were thinking on a particular day, not what you'll be thinking tomorrow.

By the way, Kris, I like your icon! Eleonora of Toledo, wife of Cosimo de' Medici. Cool!
