Space Shuttle Atlantis

Space Program: Beautiful launch of Atlantis this morning at about 11:15am (Central).

Can anyone explain to me why they've decided to stop doing night launches? I always thought those were especially beautiful to watch.

It's a safety thing. These days every launch is photographed from the moment the countdown starts until the shuttle achieves orbit, watching for anything that might've gone wrong, like the piece of flying foam that took out Columbia. Since the cameras might miss something important in the dark, they no longer launch at night.

Maudlin--Ah, that makes sense. I'll miss the night launches, but I'd rather have the shuttle and crew come back whole and unharmed.
