Announcement - Imperial Secrets.org

The imperialsecrets.org domain name will be up for renewal as of April 2, 2006. I have informed my webhost that I will not renew the domain name. I have done next to nothing with the site, and it seems to me that people's interests have moved to other projects. So have mine.

If you wish to take over the imperialsecrets.org domain name, please contact me at aerden@livejournal.com

As for what my project is--I need to do some research before I can set it up. It is something that has been staring me in the face since I started in my current job, and I have decided to do something about it.

No, it is not a novel. (g)

Webhosts? I am, meanwhile, in the market for a good webhost. I like the one I'm with, (Web-Mania), but I am interested to see what else is out there.

GMail: I just visited GMail.com, and I am impressed! But I won't switch to a GMail account until they offer a paid, ad-free option. I don't believe I should have to see advertising in my email, and I'm willing to pay for that freedom.

It would be so, so useful for dealing with mailing list/gaming email because its conversational/thread version of storing and displaying mail would eliminate the need for people to quote from previous messages in their replies. It would be more like looking at a LiveJournal conversation thread than having to plow through a buch of stuff, the way you have to when using Yahoo Groups.

Best service you'll ever get. :-) She the webhost I use, and that MoonSet uses.

Anna

Anna--Thanks so much for the suggestion. I've taken a look at the site, and I have a couple of questions.

I'm guessing this is a very small business? I notice the contact email address is at GMail, not at VirtualMagpie.

They don't seem to have a listing of their hosting packages anywhere that I could find, and it looks like they don't even do their own hosting; they go through vendors to provide that.

I am definitely considering them for some web design and logo work, and the fact that you're impressed with them says a lot. I'll just need to email them for more information before I'll want to host my site with them.

Very much appreciated!

Chantal

Chantal,

Hm. I don't know what page you were looking at to get a gmail address, but she does have a VirtualMagpie address. http://www.virtualmagpie.com/contact.php <-- that's the contact page. Her email is megan@virtualmagpie.com

It is a small business, but it's important to her to give her customer individual, personalized attention. She'll customize a hosting package for you, too. She's one of 'us.' I met her initially via Pern fandom. She's one of Angel's dearest friends -- and heck, one of mine, too! Here's a link to some of her clients: http://www.virtualmagpie.com/clients.php

Um, if it matters -- she does Todd McCaffrey and Anne McCaffrey's websites. :-) As well as the website for Angel's boss.

I moved away from web-mania earlier this year. I don't know why but my account just kept getting screwed around with them, my email (which i use extensively) wasn't reliable, and so I moved to http://www.asmallorange.com/

I heartily recommend them. I have my entire fallenseraphim.com site with them, my email hosting, and run the Lost Words archive on a wordpress blogging extension. If it weren't for my friendslist here on LJ, I'd move my entire blogging experience onto my own wordpress subdomain, I'm that secure of my service there.

I like vervehosting.com -- they are pretty much your standard ISP with standard offerings of pre-packaged mailing lists, message boards, search engines, via cpanel interface, yadda yadda yadda. But if you need hand holding, they will hold your hand. They've always been easy to reach during my various crises and panics, and quick to respond to e-mail. (The crises have been my own--downtime has never been a problem.) I use them for personal websites and for work. They are probably not the cheapest choice out there.
